The three objectives look positive. Implementation, as many media outlets are saying, will be key to the success of this strategy, though. This is a great video; it shows different sources discussing the policy shift and what it could mean regarding peace for Sudan. http://www.newsy.com/videos/u_s_shifts_sudan_policy

Thanks for your post. I just wrote one about what it means when such brutality is "normalized" by virtue of simply being used on a regular basis...when in fact it ought to be regarded still as beyond the pale. I am providing the link in case you are interested. http://euandus3.wordpress.com/2009/10/25/using-rape-against-political-protesters/

Derrida in Khartoum – Is the Disintegration of the Sudan Imminent?

My latest contribution to Konkret (7/09) deals with the intensification of the many conflicts in Africa’s biggest country. Some analysts even go so far as to predict a Somalia scenario any time soon. The warrant of arrest of the ICC for President Omar al-Bashir was supposed to raise the pressure on the Islamists, but some observers doubt that this strategy in fact succeeded. Read some excerpts of that article here.

Actually, calling the greatly reduced violence levels that characterize Darfur today "genocide" could be interpreted as an insult to the people who died during the mass violence of 2003 - 2004, when the Sudanese government did, in fact, launch a campaign of ruthless violence.

While I am a very big fan of the Enough Project and applaud the writing of an article on "Conflict Fatigue," I can't help but think that the premise is a bit limited in perspective. Yes, we need to set our sights on the long-term and in an attention-deficit society, that is a tall order. Beyond a shift in perspective we need an education on the role of compassion fatigue in being at the root of conflict fatigue. It is not merely a cognitive process that is involved. In emotionally charged situations of life and death, we miss the mark by under-recognizing the toll it takes on any human being to stay engaged. To miss this profound aspect denies us the opportunity to stay well over the long term which I am equating to being able to stay energetically alive to and engaged with these incredibly challenging situations in desperate need of sustained attention. We need much more than a shift in perspective, we need a long term plan for maintaining our own well-being as we seek to expose and re-expose ourselves to the horrors of mass atrocities. We can not afford conflict fatigue. We need a broader perspective on what it stems from.
